Top 10 Tips to Alleviate Spring Allergies

Approximately 50 million Americans are affected by seasonal allergies this time of year. This time of year, a variety of allergens, like pollen, make their way into the home, clinging to your carpet and upholstery. Scheduling a regular, professional carpet cleaning service is vital for the allergen removal process. Allergy sufferers can put their symptoms at bay and enjoy the warmer weather. Chem-Dry of Salem is a great choice, check out our Home Health Study. Listed here are tips to help you through the miserable allergy season:

Tips to Alleviate Spring Allergies

1. Know Your Triggers

Figure out what allergens trigger the allergy symptoms that are affecting your family. This is important because you may need to take a different approach for indoor allergens than you would outdoor allergens. If the trigger is inside, opening the windows to air out the house is an important step to take. The cause may be something along the lines of pet hair, dust, or mold in this case. To protect your home from an outdoor allergen like grass or tree pollen, keep your doors and windows closed as much as possible.

2. Get Rid of Standing Water Sources

Standing water sources can be hazardous since they are frequently a breeding ground for molds. To reduce the risk of mold development, get rid of these sources when possible.

3. Trap the Dust - Don’t Move it Around

Feather dusters are common in many homes, but they tend to just lift the dust from the surface and distribute it in the air. Complete removal of the dust is ideal. Use a dryer sheet, a damp cloth, or a paper towel for effective cleaning. Dryer sheets are also able to reduce static and removal dust mites.

4. Avoid Strong or Scented Chemicals

Strong cleaning agents tend to be the first to come to mind when thinking about lessening the effects of allergies, when in reality they frequently make allergies worse. The negative consequences that come when you use harsh cleaning agents can be avoided by using gentler cleaning products, like baking soda.

5. Clear Dust from ALL Surfaces

For the best results, dust every surface in your home. This includes windowsills, window frames, ceiling fans, and door frames.

6. Keep the House Cool and Dry

50% relative humidity, or lower, is recommended for optimal results in the home. A cool, dry home creates a less habitable environment for dust mite and mold spore growth than a warm, damp environment.

7. Wash or Replace Moldy Shower Curtains

Slimy, moldy shower curtains can be a huge concern for those with allergies, and they may not even realize it as the source of the problem. The mold from the shower can spread to other parts of the home. This process is made even easier in the warmer months.

8. Remove Trapped Allergens

Symptoms of allergies may be triggered by the allergens that are trapped in the carpet, rugs, and upholstery items in the home. These items should be vacuumed weekly because they act as an air filter. It is recommended to have them professionally cleaned every three to four months. For homes with allergy sufferers, look no further than Chem-Dry of Salem. Not only is our main cleaning solution certified green, but we have a home health study to prove that our product improves living conditions.

9. Wash and Air Out Bed Linens Regularly

Every one to two weeks, it is recommended to wash bed linens. Sweat, dust, and flakes of skin are among the debris accumulated on bedding. It makes for a perfect environment for dust mites.

10. Change HVAC Filters Regularly

It is recommended to change the filters in the home every 6-12 months. Homes with pets or allergies should change their filters more frequently. It may come as a surprise, but the highest MERV rating is not necessarily the best option. The reduction in airflow that the high ratings may cause can actually make things worse. Most homes use filters rated between MERV 7-12.
