7 Tips for Avoiding Fall Allergies

How to Avoid Fall Allergies

Avoiding fall allergies this season can be a critical part of enjoying this time of year. During this season, there are a lot of allergies. The most common are ragweed, outdoor mold, dust mites, and pet dander. A variety of causes can trigger allergic reactions including temperatures, wet leaves, outdoor allergens being tracked in, or even starting up the furnace for the first time. To help our customers avoid seasonal allergies, Chem-Dry has seven tips.

High-Efficiency Furnace Filter

Installing a high quality furnace filter can help your home greatly. It is possible to catch small particles like pollen, fine dust, and pet dander if you get a filter with a minimum filtration rating of MERV 8.

Close Your Doors and Windows

Since pollen can travel up to 400 miles from its source, it can seem impossible to stay away from exposure when the pollen count is up. Reducing the pollen count in your home is not too difficult. Close your doors and windows on days when the pollen count is high.

Wear a Mask

No matter the pollen count, outside work still needs to be done. Using an NIOSH N95 particulate respirator can help you keep away from aggravating particles that trigger your allergies.

Clean Your Carpets

The fibers of the carpet trap allergens and bacteria causing them to build up over time. The process used by Chem-Dry of Salem can clear your carpets and the indoor air of allergens and bacteria. You can learn more about our Home Health Study by following the link.

Get a HEPA filter Vacuum

It is unlikely that your home is cleaned every week by professional cleaners. A three-stage HEPA filter vacuum is the recommended vacuum to use once or twice weekly between professional cleanings. Reducing dust, pet dander, dust mites, and other allergens from the surfaces in your home, this machine can help you maintain the health in your home the best.

Shower Before Bed

Your hair can trap smoke, dust, pollen, and mold throughout the day. These allergens may come in contact with your face after they are transferred from your hair to the pillow when you retire at the end of the day. Rinse allergens from your hair by taking a quick shower before you lay down to minimize night-time allergy symptoms.

Allergy-Proof Your Bed

Put allergen-proof fabric covers on your box springs, pillows, and mattresses to improve the health of your bed. This is a necessary precaution to take because dust, dust mites, and their waste can build up in your bed.

*Based on studies conducted by independent laboratories of Chem-Dry’s HCE (Hot Carbonating Extraction), P.U.R.T. (Pet Urine Removal Treatment), Granite Countertop Renewal, and Tile, Stone & Grout cleaning processes. Allergens tested were dog and cat dander and dust mite allergen. Pet odor results based on testing with the most common odor sources found in dog and cat urine. Pet urine bacteria results based on Chem-Dry’s HCE cleaning process and a sanitizer, combined with P.U.R.T. All bacteria results include use of sanitizer. Figures are an average across multiple tests.
